It is the first novel to feature the characters of Tommy and Tuppence, who would go on to appear in several more of Christie's works. The story is set in post-World War I London, where the young and adventurous Tommy Beresford and Tuppence Cowley have recently been demobilized from the army. They are struggling to find work and decide to set themselves up as "young adventurers," offering their services as investigators. They are hired by a mysterious figure known only as "Mr. Whittington" to find a woman named Jane Finn, who disappeared after the sinking of the Lusitania during the war.

Honestly, I did enjoy this first Tommy and Tuppence's story. It was a refreshing change from Poirot's cases. Not that I don't like Poirot's, but I was able to follow Tommy and Tuppence more than I was able to follow Poirot. The change of narration from Tommy's POV to Tuppence's and vice versa was maybe what I enjoyed the most. It allowed me to see both versions and build up my theory of who the villain was, and I enjoyed how I was more indulged in this one. Besides, the tension between those two was magnificent.
