Description

Soren Liefberg is a distinguished author, now eighty years old and an invalid. He can also be extremely cantankerous, and his secretaries have not lasted long. Then Anne, a young woman who has worshipped him from afar, offers her services as shorthand-typist to help him get his next and probably last, book out of his head and on to paper. She joins the household which consists of Soren himself, decrepit but dominant; Lara, his wife, who seems pleasant enough at first but turns out to be something of a nervous wreck as well as a gin-addict; and Terry, his nurse, who does his work well, but can be a bit of a "shocker" in other ways.

Anne, although she is over twenty, is still a child at heart. The household soon begins to frighten her, with its tensions and its undercurrents - and then such strange happen there that anyone would be frightened.

It is Anne who tells this haunting tale, when her time at the house is over.
