-> 3.5 starsI have had this book on my physical TBR for quite some time. I am an avid YA reader and lover of fantasy so I was excited to read this (my TBR is out of control okay).However, I almost DNF'd this book at page 100. I was so bored. I normally love any paced books, fast or slow, no issue, however it was slow and nooooothing was happening. I pushed through though, I knew I would like this, and thankfully the rest of the book made up for it.The plot finally picks up and we have a great story to read. I love the world building (for the most part) of this book, once the plot picked up I was heavily interested, and the FMC instinct to shoot first, ask questions second, was a personal favourite.The romance didn't quite do it for me, but I think that is just because it felt a little copy paste from other fantasies so more is a me problem. The world building, while beautiful, was too fluffed out, we got long dragged out descriptions of things that just seemed far too extra for this story, easily could of cut down the word count on this book.The characters felt a lil 2d sometimes with some character decisions feeling very "15yr old makes dumb choice" as opposed to trained gang members.I shall be continuing this and hoping book 2 rectifies some of my issues in book 1, however I still did have a good time.-> 3.5 stars
DNF @13%Personally, I felt like the writing was trying too hard to be poetic and flowy, which in contrary, made it clunky and messed up the pace. Even though I didn't get far enough to actually have valid criticism, this is one of my biggest pet peeves in books and it completely takes me out of the story. This lead to me simply not caring about anything. I really wanted to love it but oh well. The prologue was too long and I actually got bored. I simply did not care.
I first read Foul Lady Fortune because this one didn't appeal to me as much. However, the writing was so engaging that I decided to read this duology first before continuing with the rest. And I'm so glad I did! Wow! I didn't think I would like this kind of plot, but I couldn't put this one down. What an absolute masterpiece. The bugs kinda gross me out, but other than that, everything about this book was so well plotted, the characters are intricate and real, the longing in the romance is so heartfelt, and the twist at the end had me absolutely screaming.
I love this book! I was so excited everytime I caught a Romeo and Juliette reference and I love that it's set in 1920s Shanghai and the blends of different cultures. AND THAT CLIFFHANGER... I'm definitely going to have to pick up the second book soon! ❤
Do not read this if you don't like bugs or insects. Loved the characters and the world especially Kathleen

It was hard to follow at times with the investigation but otherwise loved it, can't wait to read the next one.
After seeing this book raved about, stated to be one of those "must-read" books, I added this book to my "23 in '23" list.Let me just say... I'm disappointed. While not exactly regretting reading it, I am for expanding my reading horizons, but I just wasn't thrilled with the book as I had hoped and won't be reading the sequel.The Romeo and Juliette twist, but set in Shanghai with a fantasy twist... sounds great, right? I'm sure many people love this book, and the reviews say so. It just took me so long to get through this book. The political aspect was greater than I anticipated, which I don't particularly enjoy. The "monster" was... weird. I don't really know how to describe my thoughts on it.Overall, I have a book checked off my ever-growing TBR; and while I didn't enjoy the book, (and really, the ending was just the topping for the confusion leading the story, and I don't know how the author is going to be able to redeem the love story after that), I'm not sad I gave the book a shot.
El trabajo de documentación de la autora me ha parecido brutal, y toda esa tensión social y la violencia propia de las mafias que se palpa desde la primera página.Un "pero" por mi parte ha sido la parte romántica, ya que esperaba más escenas de acercamiento en la pareja, y los he percibido muy fríos y desconfiados entre ellos. Casi he disfrutado más con los momentos de cierta pareja secundaria que con la propia principal.
YALL I am speechless. This book was fenomenal I loved it. So besides the Twilight Saga, this was my 1st fantasy book and now all I want is fantasy reccs! I loved that the romance is there but it is not the main plot, it makes the romance feel like a slow burn but the good kind! I loved all the adventure aspects of this book. The tension within the gangs and characters was crazy. This book left me wanting more, thank god for the sequel ahahha 100% will be talking about this book for a while!
The ending of this book literally ruined me. No one talk to me until November of 2021
