This book is the first of the Vampire books I have read by this author, having read The book [b:The Purgatorium|17403167|The Purgatorium (The Purgatorium Series #1)|Eva Pohler|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1361332523s/17403167.jpg|24239067] which I enjoyed. We have our young protagonist 17 year old Gertie, who would rather hide in a book than experience life, she is sent off to Greece by her parents, who seem to be constantly disappointed with her, she feels unloved and a disappointment in all she does. But the family she is staying with are vague about the underworld of Athens...In Ms Pohler's world, The vampires of Athens, were created centuries ago by the Maenads. They live in caves beneath the acropolis, without economic resources and according to rules imposed on them by the Olympians, forbidden from turning humans into vampires, they are allowed to drink from a willing mortal. A vampire bite will infect the body for six hours, and, during that time, the mortal has the powers of flight, invisibility, strength, speed, x-ray vision, and mind control. Such great power can become irresistible, though dangerous and addicting to mortals. And Gertie is no different, she soon becomes seduced by the thrill and powers. But to her Greek family who have made her feel more loved than her real family, they are devastated when she refuses to stay away from Jeno.Gertie ends up being used as a pawn in the uprising led by Dionysus, the god of wine and lord of the vampires. The story was an enjoyable one, yes Gertie is a bit of a selfish immature 17 year old at times and she does a lot of damage when she is on a high from giving blood to Jeno, but its mostly unintentional and her intentions were good. Jeno it seems is a kind soul but having been a Vampire knows that a human life can be fleeting, but he can't ignore the feelings Gertie stirs in him, especially when he'd vowed not to get involved with a human again.I love books that are based on mythology, I love paranormal, and Ms, Pohler creates a seemless world of the past and present, I loved how she used the story of Dionysus and the other Greek gods to create a world I want to come back to soon.I have [a:Eva Pohler|4888434|Eva Pohler|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1420957388p2/4888434.jpg] Gatekeeper Series Book 1 on my kindle - I hope to read one soonAs a fan of YA books, this is another that will be enjoyable for both Teen to the young at heart, and I am eager to find out what happens next for Gertie.
