Strange things are happening on Far Island. Sheep are vanishing and there are rumours of wolves on the prowl at night. Then Donal MacBain, an old crofter from nearby Wolf Island, is found half-delirious with fear, babbling something about the Dark Ones and the breaking of the Covenant. . . .
The local people are uneasy. The arrival of the Oil Company has forced dramatic changes and the old ways die hard. . . . The men from the Oil Base dismiss it all as superstitious nonsense but Tom Scarsdale is not so sure. For Tom has met three of the Dark Ones and seen their effect on Donal MacBain. He's talked to Torvil, a dark, wild-looking boy and he's heard Torvil's warning. Then Tom unearths the legend of the wolf-people and learns how they were driven long ago to their last refuge Wolf Island the very place the Oil Company has chosen on which to build its new sub-station. Tom knows the danger is real. The Dark Ones will kill to preserve their last sanctuary.
As events draw to their chilling climax, Tom is forced to act as a go-between. But will anyone listen to his warnings? And how much longer are the werewolves going to wait?
