Includes Witch Hat Atelier Vols. 1–3.
In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream...until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she's never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody "knows" might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem!
The new Grimoire Edition is a gold-foiled hardcover of nearly 600 pages each, including color pages and bonus content and presenting this magical epic in a special large size.

View AllI love that the reason why I read Witch Hat Atelier, Volume One was because I saw a doll customisation video of the main character, Coco and I thought she was cute. Sometimes that's all it takes!
The book is fairly short, at just a couple of hundred pages, so it was a quick read but I loved every bit of it. Of course, being a manga, the artwork is stunning and I'm always in awe of how much emotions can be conveyed through the illustrations alone. There's something about the way manga can tell a story through both the artwork and dialogue that makes it so easy to become completely immersed.
Manga can be a fast-paced form of storytelling, and Witch Hat Atelier is no exception, but I never felt like I was missing anything as we're introduced to this world and Coco. She's a young girl who works alongside her mother as a seamstress in a small village, and has been fascinated by magic for most of her life (I adored the artwork of really little Coco, she's adorable). After a wizard unwittingly shows Coco the truth as to how magic occurs, our little seamstress finds herself on a brand new journey which is filled with hard work and secrets she has to keep. I couldn't help but want to see this world come to life at the magical hands of Studio Ghibli because the beauty in artwork needs to come to life in another media. (Slight amendment - I am now aware that there is a television series but ofc I haven't seen it but I will be trying to track it down and hope it's in English, but I'd still love a Ghibli adaptation because their films make me so relaxed.)
I loved that there's so much happening in the story and how there's an implication that Coco might be extremely important to the various witches and wizards even though we only meet a few in book one, I've also decided that I really want the stationery store with a tree in it to be real.. but partially filled with all the amazing stationery that exists out there. There's also little explanatory pages with explanations over the various sigils that can be used in this world or the tools of the magical world that are a necessity to create the magic that Coco is fascinated by.
I'm going to have to track down more of the books at some point - maybe my library will have them? Fingers crossed!
