Working Voices is a collection of sixty-two American monologues, most of themby speakers whose work is necessary for our way of life to exist, amongthem a kindergarten teacher, waitress, pallbearer, plumber, electrician, clown, oboist, fisherman, sawyer,temp worker and others modestly recompensed, but not excluding otherswho work, such as billionaires and a hit man. Variant sonnets permitgreat diversity in attitude. Each portrait shows a character in acontext, suggesting an aspect of American society, insuch a way as to point to underlying connectivity that, all considered,amounts to an implicit argument for solidarity.
