I'm not a lover of contemporary romance,  but when I saw it was based on Mulan, I had to give it a read. I will say, I am disappointed with that comparison. Besides the names, nothing about it really rang as Mulan for me. She didn't actually pretend to be a man, she just used a different name. There was no training, or sneaking around in the middle of the night to practice, no "war" or anything. I thought she'd have to do more to prove herself to the Lis than just watch a slew of TikTok videos and not act like a stereotypical woman. That being said, it wasn't a bad book. I like that it wasn't spicy, and that there was actually a solid plot. Shang was an interesting character and everyone had a lot of depth. As far as contemporary romance goes, this was probably my favorite, just a little misleading.
