Description

David Aristarkhov's life has always been a spiral of extraordinary abilities and haunting shadows. As a gifted teenager, he possessed psychic talents that set him apart, making him both revered and feared. But the weight of such gifts comes with a dark price, a truth that haunts him as he navigates the treacherous world of supernatural forces.

Now, as he ventures deeper into his abilities, he finds himself entangled in a web woven by ancient powers and malevolent entities. The Devil knows him by name, and with that recognition comes the promise of danger and temptation. David must confront the darkness that lurks not only around him but within himself as well. Each revelation pushes him closer to understanding his true potential, even as it threatens to consume him.

As the narrative unfolds, David grapples with the challenge of harnessing his gifts while fending off the seductive calls of the very forces that seek to manipulate him. Friendships will be tested, loyalties will shift, and the line between ally and enemy blurs.

In a world where psychic prowess can both uplift and destroy, David's journey becomes one of self-discovery, courage, and the eternal struggle against the malevolent presence that shadows his every step. His fate hangs in the balance as he learns that to summon his power, he must first confront the darkness within.

Let’s say you’ve been completely entranced by S.T. Gibson’s writing and storytelling, and you’ll do almost anything to get your hands on a copy of her next book as early as possible. Hello, that person is me.After A Dowry of Blood, I just knew whatever Gibson was going to write next, would be my thing. With this, I wasn’t wrong.Evocation immediately draws you into the story, almost like you’re part of it. It’s atmospheric, unsettling, with plenty of content warnings, but at the same time, weirdly comforting. This is because the author is a master at making you fall in love with her characters. Honestly, it doesn’t take long for you to understand them, flaws and all. The magic system within this book was so interesting. I loved the slow reveal and build of it, and I’m pretty sure there’s plenty more to come and explore.I will say that while the book is a nice blend of occult magic and relationships, this tender balance does sway more to relationship-building at points. So much so that I forgot what the main plot was about - but only for a short while. If you’re looking for something occult, queer, romantic, yet spooky, add Evocation to your list (out May 2024)!Thank you Angry Robot Books for my advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review. For more reviews and book recommendations, check out my YouTube channel
