Description

Number-one New York Times best-selling author Colleen Hoover held listeners spellbound with her novel Hopeless, the story of what happened when a troubled girl named Sky encountered a long-lost childhood friend, Dean Holder. With Holder’s help, Sky uncovered shocking family secrets and came to terms with memories and emotions that had left deep scars.

Hopeless was Sky’s story. Now, in Losing Hope, we finally learn the truth about Dean Holder.

Haunted by the little girl he couldn’t save from imminent danger, Holder’s life has been overshadowed by feelings of guilt and remorse. He has never stopped searching for her, believing that finding her would bring him the peace he needs to move on. However, Holder could not have anticipated that he would be faced with even greater pain the moment they reconnect.

In Losing Hope, Holder reveals the way in which the events of Sky’s youth affected him and his family, leading him to seek his own redemption in the act of saving her. But it is only in loving Sky that he can finally begin to heal himself.

This is the sequel to Hopeless and yes, I finished this one in less than a day as well. I know I can turn to CoHo when I want to consume a quick read. Don’t misunderstand me though… they may be quick reads, but there is nothing EASY about them. While there’s always plenty of the “awwww” fluffy romance stuff, she manages to balance that with even more completely raw, gut-wrenching moments/themes. The only reason this gets 3 stars vs the 4 stars I gave Hopeless is that it doesn’t add much more to the original story so it felt almost like a reread. This one is Holder’s POV instead of Sky’s but most of it is the same scenes and the same dialogue. It felt more like a companion novel than a whole book in itself. I did love being in his perspective and felt it made the whole storyline of both books more complete. I loved the chapters showing what Holder went through before meeting Sky and the final few chapters that acted as an epilogue for the original story.

I had just finished reading Hopeless and I'm not really a fan of reading a storyline I've already read from the second characters pov.BUT... This really did have me stuck to my reading app (it's my library e-reader) and I've read this book in one day. And not just because I can't do much else in a hospital ward... I went home and read on the bus and till I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore 😉.Ms Hoover has managed to create a new perspective and this book hit me more emotionally than Hopeless 💔. The letters Holder writes to Les were heartbreaking to me 😢. This book deal's with a horrible trauma that I wish no child would ever have to experience, but unfortunately in this world, it's something that happens 😔.I think this book was written with enough of the trauma that would come with the situation, but I'd be happy for my young grandchild to read, she wanted a "Colleen Hoover" book for her birthday, but the ones available had too graphic parts, but I think even though this story deals with suicide etc I am happy that it's done in a way would be ok for a 13 yr old girl.
